Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a Waste and Transportation Oversight Specialist to join the WSE Division at a senior level, focusing on ensuring regulatory compliance and safety in waste management operations. This role involves providing independent oversight of waste generation, storage, characterization, packaging, transportation, and disposition activities, adhering to DOE Orders, federal regulations, and state laws. The specialist will collaborate with various internal divisions and external stakeholders to enhance technical rigor and foster a culture of compliance. Key responsibilities include conducting assessments, surveillances, and readiness reviews; maintaining oversight over waste management systems like WMS-U; and ensuring adherence to DOT/PHMSA regulations for hazardous material transportation. Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, 5+ years of experience in waste management or related regulatory roles, and knowledge of quality assurance principles such as NQA-1. Preferred qualifications include DOE-site waste management experience, professional certifications, and specific training in hazmat shipping and RCRA compliance.
Provide independent oversight of waste and transportation activities to ensure compliance with regulations.
Conduct assessments and surveillances of waste characterization, processing, treatment, packaging, and storage.
Monitor adherence to DOE and regulatory transportation requirements for on-site transfers and off-site shipments.
Evaluate program conformance with relevant federal and state environmental regulations.
Develop targeted training materials and provide oversight of personnel qualifications related to nuclear facility safety.
What we're looking for
Bachelor’s degree in nuclear, chemical, environmental engineering, health physics, or related technical field.
5+ years of experience in waste management and transportation operations.
Demonstrated knowledge of regulatory requirements including RCRA/TSCA, DOT hazmat regulations, and OSHA standards.
Experience with waste characterization activities, acceptance criteria, and storage/packaging practices.
Quality assurance background, including audit participation or leadership.
Strong technical writing, analytical, and communication skills.
