The Technical Project Manager joins a multi-disciplinary team of software engineers, content creators, machine learning researchers, and conservation scientists to support Merlin, eBird, and the Macaulay Library media archive. This role serves as the lynchpin in translating ideas into features and data products for conservation practitioners by overseeing complex software projects from inception to completion. You will manage Agile/Scrum teams, coordinate activities between technical teams and collaborators, handle resource allocation, and manage project budgets. The ideal candidate possesses deep knowledge of web application development, including front-end interfaces, APIs, and web services. Required skills include proficiency with Jira and GitHub, along with experience in Python, Java, Spring, Nuxt, Vue, and JavaScript. You will solve technical challenges by delivering data products that translate biodiversity observations into actionable tools for the global birding and conservation community.
Oversee complex software projects from inception to completion for Merlin, eBird, and Macaulay Library assets.
Lead Agile/Scrum teams of software engineers and project staff to ensure successful delivery of new features.
Translate high-level ideas into specific technical requirements and data products for conservation practitioners.
Manage project planning, resource allocation, implementation tracking, and reporting for multi-team initiatives.
Define project scope and coordinate activities between technical engineering teams and external collaborators.
Assist senior leadership with the formulation of project budgets and financial management.
Communicate project goals and manage stakeholder expectations as software projects evolve.
What we're looking for
Bachelor’s degree in software development management, biological sciences, information sciences, or a related field.
Three or more years of experience in project management and coordinating software engineering teams.
Experience watching birds or working on projects to advance bird conservation.
Experience managing complex technical projects across multiple teams and cross-functional groups.
In-depth knowledge of software development, modern web application techniques, and integrating APIs into enterprise systems.
Proficiency with software development project management tools such as Jira and GitHub.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to manage stakeholder expectations and collaborate with diverse teams.
Advanced degree (preferred); deep understanding of the birding or conservation community (preferred); experience with analytics tools, cloud providers, or programming languages like Python and Java (preferred).
