TL;DR · Subsystem Architect - GM Defense

As a Subsystem Architect at GM Defense, you will join a senior-level team responsible for identifying and evaluating alternative subsystem building blocks for new military-grade vehicle products. Your day-to-day responsibilities include leading trade studies to recommend the best product approach based on packaging, performance, cost, mass, and timing, while also supporting the planning and execution of concept demonstrator builds. You will work across engineering teams to define subsystem concepts, align technical decisions, and drive data-based architecture recommendations that support program objectives. The role requires deep expertise in areas such as chassis, EMI/EMC/PSDS, thermal, or electrical architecture, software, and cybersecurity, along with proficiency in systems engineering methods, requirements management, DFMEA, DVP&R, and change control processes.

What you'll do

  • Identify subsystem architecture options for new GM Defense vehicle applications.
  • Lead trade studies comparing technical alternatives using key criteria like cost and performance.
  • Translate product needs into architectural requirements and decision criteria at the subsystem level.
  • Support early concept development by evaluating carryover, modified, and new-design subsystem solutions.
  • Resolve build issues during concept demonstrator execution to ensure successful program outcomes.

What we're looking for

  • 8+ years of professional engineering experience in vehicle, subsystem, or product engineering.
  • Deep technical expertise in vehicle integration, subsystem architecture, and system-level engineering.
  • Proven ability to evaluate multiple technical alternatives using cost, mass, performance, packaging, and timing criteria.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical and/or electrical systems’ principles and engineering theory.
  • Experience leading structured trade studies and decision matrices for technical down-selection.
  • Demonstrated capability in working effectively across cross-functional teams including engineering, manufacturing, quality, purchasing, finance, and program management.
  • Ability to create clear, concise engineering recommendations for leadership and program forums.
