The Sr. System Engineer - GM Defense IT joins the GM Defense IT team to lead and execute systems engineering activities within secure and regulated environments. This role involves partitioning and allocating product functionality to implementation teams while ensuring safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance. You will develop requirements, manage operational health through patching and upgrades, and coordinate with enterprise architecture and security leadership to maintain compliant systems. Key responsibilities include troubleshooting incidents, creating self-help tools, and mentoring junior colleagues. Required skills include experience in systems engineering, infrastructure support, or security operations, along with proficiency in gathering requirements and solution design. The role addresses the technical challenge of maintaining secure, high-performance information systems and supporting military mobility products within a strictly controlled defense and government data classification framework.
Develop functional technical requirements and partition system functionality for implementation teams.
Manage the operational health of information systems through patching, upgrades, and troubleshooting.
Monitor and document security controls to ensure compliance with cybersecurity and regulatory standards.
Partner with enterprise architecture to improve applications and tools that streamline IT processes.
Host triage sessions to identify root causes and drive resolution for systemic technical issues.
Create self-help tools, user guides, and knowledge articles to improve support processes.
Translate broad technical challenges into practical, implementable initiatives and solutions.
Mentor less experienced team members and provide technical guidance to internal IT teams.
What we're looking for
Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field or equivalent experience.
7+ years of experience delivering IT systems in a professional or corporate environment.
Experience working independently on significant technical matters to develop solutions and manage competing priorities with minimal guidance.
Experience gathering requirements and supporting solution design to deliver robust systems meeting functionality, stability, and performance expectations.
Experience in systems engineering, infrastructure support, application support, operational health management, server engineering, security operations, or technical troubleshooting.
Experience developing applications, AI agents, automation, tooling, or technical solutions to improve supportability and operational efficiency.
Strong written and verbal communication skills to collaborate with customers, project teams, architects, and security partners.
Must be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee, or refugee) due to export control restrictions.
