TL;DR · Stress Analysis Engineer, Maritime Structures

The Stress Analysis Engineer, Maritime Structures joins the Maritime Manufacturing Technology team to serve as the foundational structural authority for mission-critical maritime and subsea hardware. This individual contributor role involves leading stress analysis, materials characterization, and design allowables development for pressure-boundary enclosures and high-consequence structures. The engineer will perform classical hand calculations and advanced finite element analysis, including non-linear, buckling, fatigue, and fracture mechanics. Key responsibilities include managing the centralized allowables database, integrating metallurgy with manufacturing processes, and executing structural test programs from coupon-level testing to full-scale qualification. Required skills include proficiency in tools like Abaqus, ANSYS, or Nastran/Patran, along with experience in heavy metallic fabrication and statistical design methods. The role addresses critical engineering challenges in the maritime domain, ensuring structural integrity for advanced underwater and surface vehicle components through rigorous analysis and material validation.

What you'll do

  • Perform classical hand calculations and advanced finite element analysis on complex maritime pressure boundaries and structural enclosures.
  • Develop and maintain statistical structural design allowables for primary metallic and composite materials.
  • Manage the centralized allowables database to establish thresholds for material requalification and manufacturing changes.
  • Translate material specifications, heat treatments, and weld joint efficiencies into actionable finite element models.
  • Account for manufacturing-induced effects like residual stresses and weld distortion in structural assessments.
  • Provide quantitative stress dispositions for non-conformances, deviations, and material anomalies during production.
  • Execute structural test programs ranging from coupon-level mechanical testing to full-scale subcomponent qualification.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Structural Engineering, Materials Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • 4+ years of experience for Mid level or 7+ years of experience for Senior level in structural stress analysis on high-consequence hardware.
  • Proficiency in both classical hand calculations and commercial FEA tools such as Abaqus, ANSYS, Nastran/Patran, or HyperMesh.
  • Experience developing design allowables using statistical methods like MMPDS and collaborating with metallurgy teams on material selection and heat treatments.
  • Strong understanding of heavy metallic fabrication processes including machining, forging, casting, and welding.
  • Must be a U.S. Person to access export-controlled information or facilities.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.
