TL;DR · Staff Software Development Engineer, Rust, Compilers, and GPU Systems

Staff Software Development Engineer - Rust, Compilers, and GPU Systems will join the team developing next-generation systems software for AMD GPUs using Rust as a core technical direction. This role involves building production-quality Rust components for performance-sensitive GPU systems, including compiler pipelines, runtimes, firmware, and developer tooling. The engineer will work across various abstraction layers, including rustc internals, MIR, MLIR, LLVM IR, and AMDGPU code generation. Key responsibilities include designing typed interfaces across hardware boundaries, implementing target-specific lowering for GPU execution models, and developing bare-metal no_std Rust components. Required skills include deep expertise in Rust, C/C++, and compiler infrastructure like LLVM or GCC. The role addresses the challenge of ensuring safety and correctness in complex hardware-software systems by integrating program analysis, formal methods, and robust validation techniques to manage concurrency, memory models, and ISA-specific requirements.

What you'll do

  • Design and implement production-quality Rust components for low-level and performance-sensitive GPU systems.
  • Integrate Rust into the GPU software stack, including toolchain integration, libraries, coding standards, and deployment practices.
  • Develop compiler pipelines using rustc, MIR, MLIR dialects, LLVM IR, and AMDGPU code generation.
  • Build analyses, transformations, and target-specific lowering for GPU execution models and memory spaces.
  • Define typed and auditable interfaces across compiler, host runtime, device code, firmware, and hardware boundaries.
  • Develop bare-metal and no_std Rust components with predictable hardware effects and fail-closed handling.
  • Implement validation methods including fuzzing, property-based testing, and formal methods to ensure system correctness.
  • Author design documents and lead technical reviews to communicate complex compiler and hardware behaviors.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Strong production Rust experience including ownership, borrowing, lifetimes, traits, concurrency, and FFI.
  • Proficiency in C or C++ systems programming for working across mixed-language codebases.
  • Experience with rustc internals, MIR, custom codegen backends, or other Rust toolchain infrastructure.
  • Experience with LLVM, MLIR, GCC, or other production compiler frameworks including IR design and optimization passes.
  • Ability to read and reason about low-level assembly, ISA encodings, and machine-level execution.
  • Knowledge of GPU execution models, hardware-software co-design, and firmware/driver development.
  • Experience with program analysis, formal verification tools, or high-assurance system development.
