Staff Engineer, Payments - Core

What you'll do

• Own the architecture of the payments platform, including provider integrations and deposit and withdrawal flows.
• Design and build distributed services in Java and Spring Boot to process high transaction volumes.
• Build payment orchestration and routing to optimize for approval rates, costs, and provider health.
• Handle third-party integration failures using timeouts, retries, idempotency, and reconciliation against settlement files.
• Lead the technical onboarding of new providers and banking partners by defining integration and rollout approaches.
• Build regulatory and card scheme requirements into payment flows in partnership with Legal and Compliance.
• Integrate risk signals into the payment path to handle chargebacks and disputes.
• Set standards for security, data handling, and limiting PCI scope across all payment services.

What we're looking for

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with deep expertise in Java and Spring Boot.
• Experience building and operating production payment systems, including deposit/withdrawal flows, payment gateways, or ACH.
• Experience designing secure, high-scale, low-latency distributed systems and event-driven architectures using Kafka.
• Working knowledge of security and compliance requirements for handling payment data, including PCI DSS.
• Demonstrated success setting technical direction and driving alignment across multiple teams.
• Experience in online gaming, sports betting, fintech, or banking (preferred).
• Knowledge of card networks, acquirers, issuers, interchange, transaction classification, and chargeback processes (preferred).
• Experience with AWS, Kubernetes, and observability tooling such as Datadog, Grafana, or CloudWatch (preferred).
