Staff Engineer

What you'll do

• Write well-tested, production-ready code in Rust for the MongoDB Cloud Storage Layer.
• Define the technical roadmap and advocate for high-impact projects across multiple teams.
• Investigate performance regressions and guide the team through complex architectural trade-offs.
• Use observability tools to measure the impact of shipped features and inform engineering decisions.
• Drive consensus on complex issues by engaging stakeholders and framing technical tradeoffs.
• Mentor junior engineers and cultivate a strong talent bench through interviewing and knowledge sharing.
• Manage time-sensitive customer escalations and participate in an on-call rotation.
• Research and apply cutting-edge database and distributed systems research to the codebase.

What we're looking for

• You must have 10+ years of experience in programming, debugging, and performance tuning highly concurrent or distributed systems.
• Experience with systems languages such as C, C++, or Rust is required.
• You must demonstrate a track record as an effective technical leader who can solve vaguely defined problems.
• You must possess a solid grasp of systems fundamentals including cache management, log-based recovery, transactions, and performance profiling.
• You must be comfortable reasoning about highly concurrent, asynchronous services, backpressure, tail latency, and replicated state machines.
• Experience working on large, high-availability, and scalable systems like databases or cloud storage is required.
• You must have excellent verbal and written technical communication skills for collaboration and mentoring.
• Candidates must be based in Sydney to accommodate the hybrid working model.
