Sr. Lab Engineer – Photovoltaic Test, Amazon Leo DevOps is a senior-level role within the Amazon Leo Development Operations team supporting solar array development for satellite vehicles. The successful candidate will own the day-to-day operations of the photovoltaic test lab, managing equipment calibration schedules, preventive maintenance, and data integrity for solar cell and module test campaigns. You will partner with senior scientists to translate research needs into technical test setups, design custom fixtures, and provide feedback on equipment capabilities. Key responsibilities include troubleshooting root causes for complex hardware issues, developing work instructions, and mentoring other staff. The role requires expertise in precision lab equipment, data acquisition systems, and electro-optical characterization tools like solar simulators and I-V curve tracers. You will ensure traceable documentation while managing concurrent test requests across multiple programs involving advanced solar cell research and development.
Manage daily photovoltaic lab operations including equipment calibration, preventive maintenance, and test campaign readiness.
Translate scientist requirements into technical designs for test setups, fixtures, and data collection methods.
Provide technical feedback on proposed test designs to identify potential issues before execution.
Prioritize concurrent test requests from multiple scientists while communicating status and risks clearly.
Ensure data integrity and traceability through consistent formatting, version control, and detailed documentation.
Troubleshoot equipment and test setup issues to their root cause and coordinate with vendors for repairs.
Develop and maintain standard operating procedures, work instructions, and training materials for lab staff.
Lead lab-wide process improvements regarding layout, tooling tracking, and calibration systems.
What we're looking for
Bachelor's degree or above in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial Engineering, or a related STEM field.
6+ years of experience operating and maintaining precision lab test equipment in an electrical, electro-optical, or similar high-precision environment.
Experience managing equipment calibration, preventive maintenance, and equipment uptime in a lab setting.
Experience designing and setting up test fixtures and data acquisition setups for complex electrical or electro-optical measurements.
Demonstrated ability to maintain clean, traceable, and well-organized test data and documentation.
Experience troubleshooting complex lab equipment and test setups to root cause.
Candidates must be a U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or granted asylum/refugee status for export control compliance.
Experience with photovoltaic or electro-optical characterization equipment, measurement uncertainty budgets, mentoring staff, or aerospace environmental testing (preferred).
