TL;DR · Senior Aerodynamics Engineer

The Sr. Aerodynamics Engineer (Starship) joins the Starship Aerodynamics team to predict aerodynamic and aerothermal environments for boosters and ships across all mission phases. This role involves using engineering models, simulations, and wind-tunnel testing to provide accurate predictions before flight validation. Key responsibilities include preparing, meshing, running, and post-processing CFD models, reviewing post-flight data, and writing code for automated workflows. The engineer must interface with other teams to provide design inputs regarding physical phenomena. Required skills include experience with aerodynamic and aerothermal analysis, external compressible fluid dynamics, and data processing in MATLAB or Python. Preferred technical proficiencies include Siemens STAR-CCM+ with Java scripting, NASA solvers like FUN3D, Loci/CHEM, and DPLR, and Siemens NX. The work focuses on flow fields from subsonic to hypersonic regimes.

What you'll do

  • Prepare, mesh, run, and post-process CFD models.
  • Review post-flight data and compare results to pre-flight estimates.
  • Write code and scripts in various languages to create automated workflows.
  • Provide aerodynamic inputs and physical phenomena analysis to other engineering teams.
  • Predict aerodynamics and aerothermal environments for booster and ship missions.
  • Use engineering models, simulations, and wind-tunnel testing to validate flight predictions.
  • Analyze flow fields across subsonic through hypersonic flight regimes.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience with aerodynamic and aerothermal analysis.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee, or eligible for Department of State authorization.
  • Master's degree or PhD in aerospace or mechanical engineering (preferred).
  • Experience with Siemens STAR-CCM+ and developing scripts in Java for it (preferred).
  • Experience with NASA solvers for entry vehicles, such as FUN3D, Loci/CHEM, or DPLR (preferred).
  • Experience with experimental testing, Siemens NX, and thermal protection systems (preferred).
  • Data processing and analysis in MATLAB or Python (preferred).
