TL;DR · Flight Sciences/Stability and Control Collegiate Intern

Spring 2027 - IEF - Flight Sciences/Stability and Control - Collegiate Intern joins the Stability and Control team within Flight Dynamics and Flight Sciences to define airplane stability and control requirements. This role involves driving the design and sizing of horizontal and vertical tail surfaces, flight control surfaces, and system architectures to ensure high handling qualities. Day-to-day responsibilities include performing desktop simulations, pilot-in-the-loop simulations, and flight testing under normal and abnormal operating conditions. The intern may also contribute to simulation model development, support flight control law design, and participate in preliminary aircraft design initiatives while upgrading engineering toolsets. Required skills include strong MATLAB coding abilities. Desired qualifications include experience with Python, C++, FUN3D, Vortex Lattice Methods, Tecplot, wind tunnel testing, and data reduction. The role addresses the technical challenge of shaping flight characteristics for future aircraft.

What you'll do

  • Define airplane stability and control requirements to drive design and sizing of tail surfaces and flight control systems.
  • Conduct desktop simulations and pilot-in-the-loop simulations for normal and abnormal operating conditions.
  • Support flight testing activities to evaluate aircraft handling qualities and performance.
  • Develop simulation models and support flight control law design activities.
  • Participate in preliminary aircraft design initiatives across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Upgrade analysis and engineering toolsets to improve data collection and decision-making processes.

What we're looking for

  • Must be a full-time student pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher at the time of application.
  • Completion of sophomore year is required prior to the internship start date.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher without rounding.
  • Strong MATLAB coding skills are required.
  • Required coursework must include Aircraft Stability & Control, Aerodynamics, and/or Flight Dynamics.
  • Exposure to aircraft design activities with an emphasis on control surfaces and empennage sizing (preferred).
  • Experience in Python/NumPy or C++ (preferred).
  • Familiarity with FUN3D, Vortex Lattice Methods, Tecplot, wind tunnel testing, or CFD (preferred).
