TL;DR · Spec Mfg Technology Automation

Spec Mfg Technology Automation provides technical leadership for packaging automation, end-of-line systems, and automated material handling across manufacturing sites. The role involves developing and deploying automation solutions, equipment improvements, and process standards to enhance safety, quality, productivity, and reliability. Day-to-day responsibilities include defining technical requirements, evaluating equipment flexibility, managing capital projects, and collaborating with suppliers to validate machine concepts and layouts. The position requires expertise in industrial automation systems including PLCs, HMIs, servo drives, VFDs, robotics, vision systems, safety systems, sensors, and industrial networks. Candidates must navigate complex manufacturing environments by integrating automated material movement, such as AGV/AMR systems, into existing workflows. This role solves critical production challenges by ensuring scalable solutions for diverse product formats while driving technical risk mitigation during design reviews, installation, commissioning, and production ramp-up phases.

What you'll do

  • Provide technical leadership for packaging automation, end-of-line systems, and automated material handling across manufacturing sites.
  • Define technical requirements, equipment specifications, process scopes, and acceptance criteria for new or upgraded automation systems.
  • Direct project teams through the development of robotics, vision systems, conveyors, and automated material movement solutions.
  • Partner with suppliers to validate machine concepts, layouts, throughput assumptions, and technical proposals.
  • Oversee the full project lifecycle including design reviews, FAT, installation, commissioning, and production ramp-up.
  • Develop and implement organizational standards, best practices, and technical guidelines for packaging automation systems.
  • Identify technical risks early and develop mitigation plans to reduce design gaps and startup delays.
  • Support business cases and CAPEX planning by providing feasibility assessments and cost/benefit evaluations.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in Control and Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Ten years of engineering experience in manufacturing, project, converting, automation, or equipment design.
  • Three years of experience with packaging automation, end-of-line systems, robotics, material handling, or manufacturing equipment projects.
  • Five years of experience with machine automation, mechanical systems, product handling, case handling, conveyor systems, and process integration.
  • Working knowledge of industrial automation systems including PLCs, HMIs, servo drives, VFDs, robotics, vision systems, and industrial networks.
  • Experience managing capital projects (CAPEX) including scope definition, business case support, supplier engagement, and project delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience leading equipment projects from concept through design, FAT, installation, SAT, startup, and production ramp-up.
  • Strong understanding of machine safety requirements, including guarding, EHS expectations, risk assessments, and safety validation.
