TL;DR · Senior Software Engineer — Observability

As a Senior Software Engineer on Apple’s Wallet, Payments, and Commerce (WPC) team, you will design and develop observability platforms and reliability tooling to ensure the fast, reliable, and secure operation of critical payment systems. Your daily tasks include building an Observability platform using OTEL standards for metrics and traces, creating helper libraries for emitting telemetry data, and implementing intelligent alerting mechanisms that meet stringent compliance requirements. You will also work on refactoring legacy Java-based instrumentation into standard OpenTelemetry formats to enhance accuracy in alerting and develop AI-powered tools for incident triage and root cause analysis. The role requires expertise in Kotlin, Go, Python, or Java, a deep understanding of distributed systems, and experience with observability platforms like Prometheus, Grafana, and Datadog. Additionally, familiarity with SRE practices and hands-on experience with LLMs and AI APIs is preferred for addressing operational challenges at scale within the high-compliance domain of financial services.

What you'll do

  • Design and build an Observability platform using OTEL standards for metrics and traces.
  • Build helper libraries to emit telemetry and integrate with visualization layers like Grafana or Datadog.
  • Configure and implement Otel processors, filters, and metadata enrichment for high-volume telemetry data.
  • Refactor legacy Java-based instrumentation into standard OpenTelemetry formats for accurate alerting.
  • Develop intelligent tooling for automated incident triage and transaction-aware root cause analysis.

What we're looking for

  • 7+ years of experience in software engineering with focus on backend systems and observability tools.
  • Proven expertise in OpenTelemetry ecosystem including metrics, traces, and visualization integration.
  • Strong proficiency in Kotlin, Go, Python, or Java for building reliable telemetry solutions.
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems, data pipelines, event-driven architectures, and API design.
  • Experience designing high-throughput data ingestion and processing systems like telemetry pipelines.
  • Solid knowledge of various datastores including relational databases, NoSQL, time-series, caching layers, and message brokers.
  • Hands-on experience with observability platforms such as Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, OpenTelemetry.
