TL;DR · Senior Quantum Engineer - Digital Control Systems

As a Senior Quantum Engineer – Digital Control Systems at Microsoft Quantum, you will join the quantum control team to design and implement digital control infrastructure for cryogenic quantum systems. Your day-to-day responsibilities include developing timing-critical digital logic for real-time control and feedback of quantum hardware, performing FPGA implementation and validation, designing high-speed interfaces across multiple FPGAs, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to optimize system-level tradeoffs. You will work hands-on with FPGA platforms and cryogenic systems in a small, collaborative environment, contributing to the technical direction based on requirements and experimental results. The ideal candidate has extensive experience with FPGA design, including RTL development in Verilog or SystemVerilog, and expertise in high-speed digital interfaces and real-time control systems. This role requires a deep understanding of hardware constraints and system architecture at the intersection of quantum computing, AI, and advanced electronics.

What you'll do

  • Design and implement digital control subsystems interfacing with cryogenic hardware.
  • Develop timing-critical digital logic for real-time quantum hardware control.
  • Perform FPGA implementation and validate complex designs across multiple environments.
  • Define and support high-speed digital interfaces between FPGAs and hardware subsystems.
  • Collaborate on system-level tradeoffs to optimize performance in digital, analog domains.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field with 6+ years of technical engineering experience.
  • Design and implement digital control subsystems interfacing with cryogenic hardware and ASICs.
  • Develop timing-critical digital logic for real-time quantum hardware system control and feedback.
  • Perform FPGA implementation and validation, including constraint development and complex design timing closure.
  • Experience with high-speed digital interfaces and standard communication protocols in multi-clock domain systems.
  • Direct experience with FPGA-based platforms, bring-up, validation, and integration with experimental setups like cryogenic systems.
