TL;DR · Senior Multiphysics Engineer, High Speed Reacting Flow

Senior Multiphysics Engineer, High Speed Reacting Flow joins the Multiphysics Team to own internal flow, combustion, and heat transfer analysis for air vehicle propulsion systems. This role involves performing CFD analysis on high-speed flows with or without combustion, progressing from 1D models and hand calculations to 3D simulations to refine designs. The engineer will predict heat loads, surface temperatures, and pressures while supporting rocket nozzle, insulation, and case design decisions. Key responsibilities include building repeatable workflows, comparing predictions against static fire and ground test data, and performing material response analysis in high-temperature environments. Required skills include expertise in compressible flow, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics. The role requires proficiency in commercial CFD codes like STAR-CCM+ or Fluent, along with programming experience in Python or MATLAB to support the development of advanced defense technologies.

What you'll do

  • Perform CFD analysis of internal and high-speed flows involving combustion.
  • Size designs using hand calculations and 1D models before refining them with 3D CFD.
  • Predict heat loads, surface temperatures, and pressures for thermal and structural teams.
  • Set up gas properties and chemistry appropriate to the modeled conditions.
  • Support rocket nozzle, insulation, and case design decisions through technical analysis.
  • Build and document repeatable workflows for other engineers to execute consistent analyses.
  • Compare simulation predictions against static fire and ground test data to improve models.
  • Support material response and erosion analysis in high-temperature environments.

What we're looking for

  • Master’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a related field.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. secret security clearance.
  • 5+ years of experience in CFD, aerothermal, thermal, or combustion analysis.
  • Foundational understanding of compressible flow including shocks, choked flow, and supersonic nozzles.
  • Strong first-principles understanding of heat transfer and fluid dynamics.
  • Experience with commercial CFD code such as STAR-CCM+, Fluent, or similar.
  • Proficiency in applying hand calculations and 1D models to independently validate CFD results.
  • Programming experience in Python, MATLAB, or similar; technical writing and presentation skills are required.
  • PhD in a related field (preferred).
  • Active U.S. Secret or Top Secret security clearance (preferred).
  • Experience with solid rocket motors, propulsion systems, or energetic materials (preferred).
  • Experience with reacting flow modeling, chemistry/gas property tools, or high-temperature flows (preferred).
  • Experience with multiphase flow, exhaust plumes, or comparing models against instrumented test data (preferred).
  • Scripting and automation experience in Python, STAR-CCM+ Java macros, or Fluent UDFs (preferred).
