Senior Mechanical Engineer, Mechanisms, Space

What you'll do

• Design mechanisms for space payloads including optical focus, shutters, and filter wheels.
• Perform hand calculations to size actuators and components based on first principles.
• Select, procure, and rigorously test sensors and actuators for extreme environments.
• Manage hardware design from initial concept through launch and production phases.
• Build prototypes and analyze failures to transition designs into flight hardware.
• Create technical documentation including test plans, reports, drawings, and specifications.
• Lead subsystem design reviews and provide updates on technical progress and timelines.

What we're looking for

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering or hard science.
• Ability to obtain and hold a U.S. Top Secret security clearance.
• 5+ years of mechanism design experience with space hardware and a track record of fielding flight hardware.
• Mechatronics experience including component selection, control loop prototyping, and integration into mechanical/electrical assemblies.
• Coding experience in Python, MATLAB, or C++ for analytical models and data acquisition.
• Experience using microcontrollers such as Arduino, RasPi, or STM for prototyping.
• Experience with high-reliability design, including athermalization and vibration/shock resistance.
• Experience with mechanical alignments, kinematic mounting, and qualification test campaigns.
