TL;DR · Senior Mechanical Engineer: Mechanisms, Space

Join a leading space technology team as a Senior Mechanical Engineer, where you will design mechanisms for space payloads ranging from small cameras to large telescopes. Your responsibilities include creating detailed designs that survive launch and space environments, conducting literature reviews, performing hand calculations, selecting components, rigorously testing hardware, and mentoring junior engineers. You will use Python, MATLAB, or C++ for analytical models and data acquisition, work with microcontrollers like Arduino or Raspberry Pi, and ensure high-reliability design standards are met. This role requires a BS in engineering or hard science, 5+ years of mechanism design experience in space hardware, and the ability to obtain U.S. Top Secret clearance.

What you'll do

  • Create mechanisms for space payloads that survive launch and space environments.
  • Select, procure, and rigorously test actuators and sensors for space hardware.
  • Own the design process from concept to launch for mechanical subsystems.
  • Build prototypes, analyze failures, and transition designs to flight hardware.
  • Communicate system architecture pros/cons with respect to mechanism performance.

What we're looking for

  • BS or higher degree in engineering or hard science required.
  • 5+ years of mechanism design experience with space hardware.
  • Mechatronics expertise including actuator and sensor selection, control loop architecture.
  • Coding skills in Python, MATLAB, or C++ for analytical models and data acquisition.
  • Experience with high-reliability design, athermalization, and vibration/shock resistance.
  • Hands-on fabrication and assembly skills with tools like mills and lathes.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to define scope for ambiguous problems.
