Senior Infra Engineer, Data Governance

What you'll do

• Design and optimize large-scale batch jobs to process petabytes of data across massive compute clusters.
• Build and maintain authorization infrastructure including policy engines, row-level security, and credential vending.
• Implement fine-grained access controls consistently across heterogeneous storage systems and Kafka.
• Engineer systems to ensure data security, privacy compliance, and "right to be forgotten" requests.
• Develop abstractions for data access that are correct, auditable, and scalable.
• Manage and optimize large-scale compute frameworks such as Spark or Flink.
• Monitor and maintain the engineering and operations of systems governing Shopify's data warehouse.

What we're looking for

• Strong data engineering fundamentals in SQL and Java.
• Hands-on experience with large-scale compute frameworks such as Spark or Flink.
• Experience designing and optimizing pipelines that process very large datasets.
• Understanding of how data is stored and transformed at scale to ensure efficient query performance.
• Ability to work across multiple storage and streaming systems and learn their security surfaces quickly.
• Experience building or operating authorization frameworks like RBAC, ABAC, or row-level security (preferred).
• Prior exposure to privacy engineering, data deletion, or compliance-driven data workflows (preferred).
• Experience with Terraform, policy engines (OPA/Rego, Cedar), or infrastructure-as-code patterns (preferred).
