TL;DR · Senior Advanced Manufacturing Engineer, Laser Processing & Precision Joining

Senior Advanced Manufacturing Engineer, Laser Processing & Precision Joining joins the NMPH Advanced Manufacturing Engineering team to support the development of next-generation implantable medical devices. This role involves leading the development and optimization of manufacturing processes for early-stage product development, rapid prototyping, and manufacturing feasibility studies. You will perform hands-on laboratory activities to develop processes involving laser welding, cutting, marking, texturing, resistance welding, and hermetic sealing. Key responsibilities include executing Design of Experiments (DOE), process characterization, and troubleshooting leak-testing methods like helium leak testing. The role requires expertise in precision joining, micro-machining, and CAD/CAM systems to solve complex manufacturing challenges for high-reliability medical devices. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to influence design decisions and transition scalable solutions from concept through commercialization while ensuring technical risk is mitigated during the production of miniature components and assemblies.

What you'll do

  • Develop and optimize manufacturing processes for laser welding, cutting, marking, and other precision joining technologies.
  • Lead feasibility studies and rapid prototyping to evaluate manufacturability and technical risks for implantable devices.
  • Design and execute Design of Experiments (DOE) and process characterization studies to establish manufacturing parameters.
  • Create engineering solutions for miniature components, hermetic packaging, and high-reliability medical device assemblies.
  • Develop and troubleshoot hermetic sealing and helium leak testing processes to ensure product integrity.
  • Design tooling, fixtures, and precision alignment systems for prototype and development builds.
  • Partner with R&D and design teams to influence material selection and manufacturing strategies.
  • Manage the transition of scalable manufacturing solutions from initial concept through full production scale-up.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Materials, or Welding Engineering with 4+ years of experience, OR a Master’s degree with 2+ years of experience, OR a PhD.
  • Hands-on experience with laser processing, resistance welding and joining technologies, or related advanced manufacturing methods.
  • Experience developing manufacturing processes through structured experimentation, process characterization, and technical problem solving.
  • Experience analyzing process performance using data-driven approaches to establish process capability and manufacturing solutions.
  • Experience with specific laser techniques like cutting, texturing, marking, ablation, or micro-machining (preferred).
  • Experience with precision joining processes such as parallel-gap or step-gap welding (preferred).
  • Experience supporting implantable medical devices, miniature assemblies, or other high-reliability products (preferred).
  • Work authorization at the time of hire and for the duration of employment.
