Robotics Engineer Sr / Spec / Princ joins the Robotics Engineering team to identify, develop, and implement robotics and automation technology across shipyard facilities. This role involves performing technical feasibility analyses, developing business cases for funding, and managing projects from specification through vendor selection and integration. The engineer will perform hands-on robotic development, capability testing, hardware creation, software programming, and technical documentation while mentoring junior personnel. Key skills include expertise in robotics, automation, mechatronics, PLC/HMI, and simulation. Preferred experience includes working with multi-axis industrial robotic arms like ABB, FANUC, or Universal Robots, as well as knowledge of 3D measurement systems and PLC ladder logic. The role focuses on solving manufacturing challenges by integrating automated solutions into the shipbuilding process to improve product quality, personnel safety, and construction efficiency for nuclear submarine production.
Identify robotics and automation opportunities across shipyard facilities to improve production quality and safety.
Perform technical feasibility analyses and develop business cases to secure funding for new technologies.
Manage projects by developing specifications, selecting vendors, and overseeing budgets and schedules.
Develop, test, and accept custom robotic systems in collaboration with external vendors.
Perform hands-on robotics development and capability testing on-site.
Create hardware, write software, and produce technical documentation for automated systems.
Provide deck-plate support and implement robotic systems into active manufacturing processes.
Serve as a subject matter expert to coordinate with internal stakeholders and Navy customers.
What we're looking for
Bachelor's Degree or higher in Engineering or an equivalent technical degree.
5+ years of post-graduate engineering experience.
Minimum of 5 years of relevant job experience.
Project Management or task lead experience.
Knowledge in at least one area including Robotics, Automation, Mechatronics, Programming, Simulation, Systems, Controls, PLC/HMI, Software, Industrial, Manufacturing, Cutting, Welding, or Coatings.
Experience developing business cases, cost/benefit analysis, project budgets, and schedules (preferred).
Experience leading teams in process, machine, or facility integration (preferred).
Experience with vendor evaluation, development, testing, industrial fabrication, 3D measurement systems, or shipbuilding/defense manufacturing (preferred).
