Research Intern - Machine Learning at MSR NYC is a research internship position within the Microsoft Research New York City group. Working alongside doctoral candidates and world-class researchers, interns put inquiry and theory into practice by collaborating on research and development strides. Day-to-day responsibilities include working with mentors, presenting findings, and contributing to the research community over a twelve-week period. The role focuses on machine learning and artificial intelligence, specifically addressing reinforcement learning for language models, the science of deep learning, post-training, model interpretability and steering, reasoning, recursive self-improvement, and test-time scaling. Candidates should possess a theoretical and empirical background, with preferred experience in deep learning and language modeling frameworks such as pytorch, huggingface transformers, and virtual Large Language Models like vLLM.

What we're looking for
Currently enrolled in a Doctorate Degree program in Computer Science or a related STEM field.
Experience with deep learning and language modeling frameworks like pytorch, huggingface transformers, or virtual Large Language Models (vLLM) (preferred).
Submit a minimum of two reference letters, a cover letter, and relevant work or research samples.
Must be physically located in the manager’s Microsoft worksite location for the duration of the internship.
