TL;DR · Quantum Research Scientist

The Quantum Research Scientist joins the IBM Research team to advance the field of quantum computing through fundamental theoretical investigation. In this role, you will design novel and efficient quantum algorithms for scientifically and practically meaningful problems, specifically focusing on implementations for fault-tolerant quantum computers. Your daily responsibilities include characterizing quantum speed-ups using computational complexity theory, comparing results against state-of-the-art classical methods, and collaborating with compiler, error-correction, and hardware research teams to optimize algorithms. You will also disseminate findings through peer-reviewed journals and scientific conferences. Required expertise includes a doctorate in Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Engineering, along with a foundation in quantum information theory, linear algebra, and proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language to solve complex quantum computing challenges.

What you'll do

  • Design novel and efficient quantum algorithms for scientifically and practically meaningful problems.
  • Focus on developing quantum algorithms specifically suited for fault-tolerant quantum computers.
  • Characterize quantum speed-ups using computational complexity theory and comparisons with state-of-the-art classical methods.
  • Collaborate with compiler, error-correction, and hardware teams to optimize algorithms for early fault-tolerant architectures.
  • Disseminate research findings through publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences.
  • Engage with academic collaborators to help shape the intellectual direction of quantum algorithms research.

What we're looking for

  • Doctorate Degree in Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated research experience in the design and analysis of quantum algorithms.
  • A track record of independent theoretical research with original contributions to the field.
  • Solid foundation in quantum information theory, computational complexity, and linear algebra.
  • Proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language.
  • Strong publication record in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals and top-tier conference proceedings (preferred).
  • Experience serving on technical program committees or as a reviewer for reputable conferences and journals (preferred).
  • Postdoctoral research experience or completion of a graduate program focused on quantum algorithms or complexity theory (preferred).
