TL;DR · Quantum Algorithms Theory Intern

JOB TITLE: Quantum Algorithms Theory Intern 2027 As a research intern within the Theory of Quantum Algorithms team, you will collaborate with theorists to discover and develop new quantum algorithms for scientifically and practically meaningful problems. Your primary focus involves designing algorithms specifically for fault-tolerant quantum computers, including work on quantum simulation, differential equations, and quantum approaches to learning and testing. You will investigate well-defined research questions, characterize potential quantum speed-ups using computational complexity theory, and document findings for peer-reviewed publications. The role requires expertise in physics, computer science, mathematics, or engineering, with a focus on quantum information theory. You will utilize Python, Qiskit, NumPy, SciPy, and Matplotlib to perform independent theoretical research. This work addresses the technical challenge of creating scalable, fault-tolerant quantum architectures and solving complex physical systems.

What you'll do

  • Investigate a well-defined research question in quantum algorithms to produce original theoretical contributions.
  • Develop new quantum algorithms for scientifically and practically meaningful problems.
  • Characterize potential quantum speed-ups by comparing candidate algorithms against state-of-the-art classical methods.
  • Use tools from computational complexity theory to analyze algorithmic performance.
  • Evaluate how algorithmic ideas connect to implementations for fault-tolerant quantum architectures.
  • Document research findings for use in peer-reviewed publications or conference submissions.
  • Present research results to colleagues and mentors within the Theory of Quantum Algorithms team.

What we're looking for

  • Master's Degree (preferred).
  • Enrollment in an academic graduate program in Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Coursework or research projects in quantum algorithms, quantum information theory, computational complexity, and linear algebra.
  • Demonstrated experience performing independent theoretical research, such as a thesis or prior publications.
  • Experience with at least one general-purpose programming language, such as Python.
  • Publications or preprints in quantum algorithms, quantum complexity theory, or related areas (preferred).
  • Programming experience in core and scientific Python libraries and Qiskit (preferred).
