TL;DR · Quantum Hardware Test Engineering Intern

The Quantum Hardware Test Engineering Intern 2027 joins the IBM Quantum team focused on building, deploying, and calibrating utility scale quantum computer systems. This role involves assembling mechanical and wiring components inside dilution refrigerators to support superconducting qubits cooled to 10mK. The intern will perform day-to-day tasks including testing and troubleshooting installations while conducting investigative studies to improve assembly methodologies. Required skills include proficiency in electrical test, design of experiments, and programming for test automation. Preferred qualifications include knowledge of microwave circuits, circuit design principles, Python, Linux shell, and cryogenic systems. This position addresses the technical challenge of developing large-scale quantum hardware controlled by microwave pulses from room temperature electronics. The work centers on the physical infrastructure required to maintain stable quantum environments and reliable signal delivery in extreme cryogenic conditions.

What you'll do

  • Assemble mechanical and wiring components inside dilution refrigerators.
  • Test and troubleshoot installed quantum system components.
  • Conduct investigative studies on methodologies to improve assembly processes.
  • Perform electrical testing and design of experiments for hardware systems.
  • Develop and implement test automation using programming knowledge.
  • Troubleshoot complex systems within the quantum computing infrastructure.
  • Support the deployment and calibration of large-scale superconducting qubit systems.

What we're looking for

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Bachelor's Degree (preferred).
  • Studies in EE, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • Proficiency in electrical test and design of experiments.
  • Programming knowledge for test automation.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex systems.
  • General knowledge of microwave circuits, components, and test equipment (preferred).
  • Knowledge of circuit design principles, Python, Linux shell, and cryogenic systems (preferred).
