JOB TITLE: Principal, Systems Administration
The Principal, Systems Administration serves as a solution engineering generalist and sub-service owner for Grid Computing and High Performance Computing. In this role, you will design, deploy, and operate secure, high-performing compute environments supporting engineering, scientific, and mission applications. You will lead service roadmaps, capacity planning, and job-scheduler ecosystems while collaborating with researchers and cybersecurity teams. Key responsibilities include maintaining Linux/Unix systems like RHEL, CentOS, and Ubuntu, and managing interconnect infrastructure. You will utilize tools such as Slurm, Altair Grid software, Ansible, and Kubernetes to implement DevOps practices like continuous integration and infrastructure as code. The role focuses on solving technical problems related to scientific-computing workloads, performance benchmarking, and providing scalable, resilient compute capabilities across distributed environments.
Design, configure, and maintain Linux/Unix HPC systems, networks, and interconnect infrastructure.
Own the Grid/HPC service roadmap, standards, capacity planning, and resource-scheduling services.
Manage job-scheduler ecosystems including Altair Grid software and Slurm.
Perform performance analysis, benchmarking, and system optimization to sustain availability and throughput.
Diagnose hardware and software issues while implementing backup, recovery, patching, and vulnerability remediation.
Apply DevOps practices including CI/CD, automated testing, scripting, and configuration management to the system lifecycle.
Support scientific-computing workloads and provide job optimization training to researchers and engineers.
What we're looking for
Bachelor’s Degree and 12 years of relevant experience, a Graduate Degree and 10 years of related experience, or 16 years of experience without a degree.
8 years of progressive Linux/Unix systems administration, infrastructure engineering, platform engineering, or high-availability operations experience.
Advanced Linux/Unix administration experience with RHEL, CentOS, and/or Ubuntu, including shell scripting, configuration management, patching, and backup/recovery (preferred).
Experience designing, deploying, and maintaining HPC clusters, including compute, storage, networking, and distributed or scientific-computing environments (preferred).
Experience administering Slurm and Altair Grid software, including scheduling, queues, policies, usage allocation, and capacity management (preferred).
Experience with performance analysis, benchmarking, systems/application optimization, monitoring, and applying DevOps practices like CI/CD and automated testing (preferred).
Proficiency with Kubernetes, parallel file systems, high-speed interconnects, Ansible, Infrastructure as Code, AWS, or Azure (preferred).
