JOB TITLE: Principal Engineer, Clinical Data and AI Platforms
The Principal Engineer, Clinical Data and AI Platforms leads the design and development of a platform that transforms clinical, claims, and document data into insights for patients, providers, and payers. Working within a regulated environment, this role involves designing architecture on Google Cloud for data acquisition, identity resolution, FHIR harmonization, and LLM engines. Key responsibilities include writing production code in Python, Go, Java, or C#, and leading the adoption of AI coding agents for development and operations. The engineer will utilize tools like GKE, BigQuery, Spanner, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, and Vertex AI. The role requires managing complex trade-offs in data rights, scale, and reliability while ensuring enterprise control conformance, including data lineage, model governance, and automated audit evidence collection for healthcare data systems.
Design the platform architecture on Google Cloud covering data acquisition, identity resolution, and FHIR harmonization.
Write production code for the platform's most critical and complex components.
Lead the development of practices and guardrails for using AI coding agents across engineering teams.
Design AI-assisted operations for incident triage, runbook automation, and capacity management.
Implement enterprise controls for change management, data lineage, and model governance in a regulated environment.
Automate the collection of audit evidence in partnership with security and compliance teams.
Explain complex systems and technical business cases to engineers, product leaders, and senior executives.
What we're looking for
12+ years of experience building production distributed systems.
5+ years leading architecture across multiple teams at the staff or principal level.
Experience designing and delivering large-scale batch and streaming data platforms in a demanding engineering environment.
Current, hands-on coding experience in Python and either Go, Java, or C#.
Deep experience with cloud platforms, preferably Google Cloud, including GKE, BigQuery, Spanner, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, Vertex AI and VPC Service Controls (preferred).
Production experience with machine learning or large language model systems, including retrieval, extraction, evaluation and serving at scale.
Extensive use of AI agents across design, development, testing and code review work with measurable impact on delivery.
Experience in a regulated environment, including designing controls and supporting systems through audits.
Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
