JOB TITLE: Principal Data Architect, PostgreSQL Database - Ai & Data Platforms (AiDP) The Principal Data Architect, PostgreSQL Database - Ai & Data Platforms (AiDP) joins the PostgreSQL team to lead the technical direction of Apple's cloud-based relational database service. This role serves as a recognized technical authority for PostgreSQL internals, responsible for shaping engine features, storage, replication, and high-availability standards. You will drive an upstream-first strategy, representing Apple in the global open-source community while mentoring the next generation of contributors. Key responsibilities include aligning technical execution with business priorities and ensuring enterprise-class performance across distributed systems. The role requires deep expertise in PostgreSQL internals, C, C++, and Rust, alongside a mastery of operating-system principles, memory management, and disk I/O. You will solve complex problems regarding query execution, MVCC, and scaling for massive workloads.

What you'll do

  • Lead the technical direction and set engineering standards for PostgreSQL internals across query execution, storage, and replication.
  • Drive an upstream-first strategy to ensure Apple's database requirements are met within the community PostgreSQL project.
  • Represent Apple as a trusted voice in global PostgreSQL community mailing lists and at major industry conferences.
  • Mentor and grow the next generation of Apple's PostgreSQL contributors into significant community contributors.
  • Lead design and code reviews to cultivate deep internals expertise across the database engineering team.
  • Anticipate systemic challenges and frame technical approaches to resolve issues in high-availability and scaling.
  • Align technical execution with business priorities by advising engineering leaders and key stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with upstream committers to refine and land improvements that maintain a unified community codebase.

What we're looking for

  • Current or former committer to the PostgreSQL open source project.
  • Demonstrated, sustained record of contributing features to PostgreSQL that have been well received upstream.
  • BS in Computer Science or related field with 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • High level of proficiency in C (and, where relevant, C++ or Rust).
  • Advanced understanding of data structures and algorithms in storage and indexing.
  • Deep knowledge of the internals of PostgreSQL.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership and the ability to set technical direction across teams.
  • MS or PhD in Computer Science/related fields (MS with 8+ years or PhD with 5+ years of relevant experience) (preferred).
