JOB TITLE: Principal Data Architect, PostgreSQL Database - Ai & Data Platforms (AiDP) The Principal Data Architect, PostgreSQL Database - Ai & Data Platforms (AiDP) joins the PostgreSQL team to lead the technical direction of Apple's cloud-based relational database service. This role serves as a technical authority on PostgreSQL internals, overseeing query execution, storage, replication, and high-availability. You will drive an upstream-first strategy, representing Apple in the global open-source community to ensure the database meets enterprise-class performance and durability requirements. Key responsibilities include mentoring engineers, setting engineering standards, and aligning technical execution with business priorities. The role requires deep expertise in C, C++, or Rust, along with mastery of data structures, algorithms, and operating-system principles like memory management and disk I/O. You will solve complex problems regarding distributed systems, load balancing, and request pipelining for massive scale workloads.

What you'll do

  • Lead the technical direction and set engineering standards for PostgreSQL internals across query execution, storage, and replication.
  • Drive an upstream-first strategy by shaping Apple's database requirements into proposals for the global PostgreSQL community.
  • Represent Apple as a trusted voice in community mailing lists and at major PostgreSQL conferences.
  • Mentor and grow the next generation of Apple's PostgreSQL contributors and database engineering talent.
  • Anticipate systemic challenges and frame technical approaches to ensure high-quality engineering across multiple teams.
  • Collaborate with upstream committers to refine and land improvements in the community PostgreSQL codebase.
  • Advise engineering leaders and stakeholders to align technical execution with business priorities.
  • Conduct design and code reviews to cultivate deep internals expertise across the database team.

What we're looking for

  • Current or former committer to the PostgreSQL open source project.
  • Demonstrated, sustained record of contributing features to PostgreSQL that have been well received upstream.
  • BS in Computer Science or related field with 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • High level of proficiency in C (and, where relevant, C++ or Rust).
  • Advanced understanding of data structures and algorithms in storage and indexing.
  • Deep knowledge of the internals of PostgreSQL.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership and the ability to set technical direction across teams.
  • MS or PhD in Computer Science/related fields (MS with 8+ years or PhD with 5+ years of relevant experience) (preferred).
