JOB TITLE: Principal Data Architect, PostgreSQL Database - Ai & Data Platforms (AiDP) The Principal Data Architect, PostgreSQL Database - Ai & Data Platforms (AiDP) joins the PostgreSQL team to lead the technical direction of Apple's cloud-based relational database service. This role serves as a recognized technical authority for PostgreSQL internals, responsible for shaping engine features, query execution, storage, replication, and high-availability. You will drive an upstream-first strategy, representing Apple in the global open-source community to ensure the database meets enterprise-class performance and durability requirements. Key responsibilities include mentoring the next generation of contributors, aligning technical execution with business priorities, and solving complex distributed systems problems. Required expertise includes deep knowledge of PostgreSQL internals, C, C++, or Rust, and operating-system principles like memory management and disk I/O to support massive workloads across global data centers.

What you'll do

  • Lead the technical direction and set engineering standards for PostgreSQL internals across query execution, storage, and replication.
  • Mentor and grow the next generation of Apple's PostgreSQL contributors into significant community contributors.
  • Drive an upstream-first strategy to ensure Apple's database requirements are met within the community PostgreSQL project.
  • Represent Apple as a trusted voice in global PostgreSQL community mailing lists and at major conferences.
  • Anticipate systemic challenges and frame technical approaches to resolve them across multiple engineering teams.
  • Review and approve designs and code to ensure a high quality bar for database performance and reliability.
  • Align technical execution with business priorities by advising engineering leaders and key stakeholders.

What we're looking for

  • Current or former committer to the PostgreSQL open source project.
  • Demonstrated, sustained record of contributing features to PostgreSQL that have been well received upstream.
  • BS in Computer Science or related field with 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • High level of proficiency in C (and, where relevant, C++ or Rust).
  • Advanced understanding of data structures and algorithms in storage and indexing.
  • Deep knowledge of the internals of PostgreSQL.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership and the ability to set technical direction across teams.
  • MS or PhD in Computer Science/related fields (MS with 8+ years or PhD with 5+ years of relevant experience) (preferred).
