TL;DR · Principal Cloud Engineer

As a Principal Cloud Engineer at GDIT, you will join the IT Infrastructure and Operations team to support the mission of the Healthcare Fraud prevention Partnership (HFPP) Trusted Third party. You will design, implement, and manage AWS-based cloud environments and hybrid infrastructure while developing architecture patterns, reusable templates, and engineering standards for secure, scalable platforms. Your daily responsibilities include managing Amazon VPCs, implementing identity and access management via AWS IAM, and building infrastructure-as-code solutions using AWS CloudFormation. You will also oversee incident response, performance tuning, and the integration of AI-assisted engineering workflows. The role requires expertise in Python, Bash, PowerShell, and JavaScript/Node.js, alongside experience with Linux and Windows systems. You will solve complex technical challenges involving cloud security, networking, and data movement to combat fraud, waste, and abuse within a regulated environment.

What you'll do

  • Design, implement, and manage AWS-based cloud environments and hybrid infrastructure for secure, scalable operations.
  • Develop infrastructure-as-code solutions using AWS CloudFormation and other automation frameworks to streamline provisioning.
  • Manage complex networking components including VPCs, subnets, route tables, security groups, and load balancing.
  • Implement identity and access management (IAM) practices following the principle of least privilege.
  • Build observability capabilities using Amazon CloudWatch for monitoring, logging, alerting, and performance tuning.
  • Execute incident response, root-cause analysis, and capacity planning for production cloud environments.
  • Integrate AI-assisted engineering workflows to accelerate scripting, infrastructure automation, and documentation.
  • Create technical documentation including architecture diagrams, runbooks, and system design documents.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 6 to 10 years of progressive experience in cloud engineering, systems engineering, DevOps, or infrastructure engineering.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience designing, deploying, and supporting AWS cloud environments in production.
  • Proficiency with scripting and programming languages including Python, Bash, PowerShell, and JavaScript/Node.js.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code using AWS CloudFormation, Terraform, or similar tools.
  • Strong networking knowledge including TCP/IP, DNS, TLS, routing, firewalls, and load balancing.
  • Experience managing AWS identity and access management (IAM) and cloud security best practices.
  • AWS certifications such as Solutions Architect Professional or DevOps Engineer Professional (preferred).
