Principal Applied Researcher

What you'll do

• Lead groundbreaking research projects focused on the future of AI for developers.
• Translate research findings into functional products for developer tools like GitHub Copilot.
• Build and train state-of-the-art machine learning models and large-scale experiments.
• Create new datasets using public code and internal Microsoft data.
• Apply and advance techniques such as RAG and evaluation for LLMs in software engineering.
• Run experiments to evaluate, iterate, and improve AI projects at a large scale.
• Stay current on research literature and product advances in AI for software engineering.

What we're looking for

• A Doctorate in a relevant field, or a Master's degree with 3+ years of research experience, or a Bachelor's degree with 4+ years of research experience.
• Equivalent professional experience to the minimum education and research requirements.
• Ability to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check every two years.
• Experience publishing academic papers as a lead author or essential contributor.
• Experience participating in top conferences in relevant research domains.
• At least 2 years of experience building machine learning and AI for production environments.
• At least 3 years of experience developing and deploying live production systems as part of a product team.
• At least 3 years of experience developing products or systems from ideation to shipping.
