As a Principal Application Engineer on the Application Modernization Platform team, you will lead the transformation of legacy relational-based Java applications into modern cloud-based architectures powered by MongoDB. You will be responsible for assessing complex estates, decomposing monoliths, and designing production-quality solutions including APIs, integrations, and relational-to-document data modeling. Your daily work involves navigating technical trade-offs, mentoring engineers, and creating reusable migration playbooks while leveraging GenAI tools to accelerate delivery. The role requires expert proficiency in Java, Spring Boot, SQL, and Git-based version control within an Agile environment. You will solve sophisticated problems by identifying embedded business logic and ensuring high-quality standards through CI/CD, automated testing, and observability. This position focuses on the specific technical challenge of migrating enterprise systems to modern architectures while maintaining data integrity and performance during high-risk transitions.
Migrate legacy Java applications to modern cloud-based architectures using MongoDB and GenAI tools.
Assess legacy systems to uncover dependencies, business logic, and integration points for modernization.
Design and implement production-quality solutions using Java, Spring Boot, and relational-to-document data modeling.
Develop automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and observability practices to ensure safe, incremental delivery.
Act as a technical partner to customers by explaining complex trade-offs and navigating high-risk changes.
Create reusable migration playbooks and documentation to improve team efficiency and engineering standards.
Innovate on new GenAI-based solutions to solve specific challenges during the modernization process.
What we're looking for
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
At least 8 years of experience designing, building, and delivering Java applications, including leading complex application modernization initiatives.
Expert knowledge of Java fundamentals, object-oriented design, concurrency, error handling, performance, and maintainable software architecture.
Deep production experience with Spring Boot for building resilient services, APIs, integrations, and testable distributed applications.
Proven ability to assess legacy estates, decompose monoliths, and define practical modernization strategies with clear trade-offs.
Strong experience with relational databases, SQL, stored procedures, data migration, and relational-to-document modeling for MongoDB or similar systems.
Experience delivering high-cadence applications using Agile methodologies, test-first development, CI/CD pipelines, Git version control, and observability practices.
Familiarity with tools like Postman, IntelliJ IDEA, Maven/Gradle, and ORM tools like Hibernate (preferred); experience with GenAI technologies or AI-powered development tools (preferred).
