TL;DR · Post-Quantum Cryptography Engineer

The Post-Quantum Cryptography Engineer joins the Digital Sector to support the Department of Veterans Affairs on the Cybersecurity Operations Systems Engineering program. This role focuses on designing, implementing, and assessing enterprise security architecture while aligning systems with Zero Trust principles and NIST frameworks. The engineer will evaluate existing cryptographic technologies, assess quantum-related risks, and develop migration strategies for transitioning infrastructure to quantum-resistant standards. Day-to-day tasks include maintaining a cryptographic inventory, performing technical analysis using classical and quantum simulation tools, and developing crypto-agile architectures. Required skills include expertise in quantum information science, RSA, AES, and PKI. The candidate will utilize programming languages such as Python, C++, and Java, alongside quantum frameworks like Qiskit, Cirq, Quipper, and the Microsoft Quantum Development Kit to mitigate "harvest now, decrypt later" risks and ensure long-term data protection across various enterprise environments.

What you'll do

  • Analyze the impact of quantum computing on existing infrastructure and identify vulnerabilities in current cryptographic implementations.
  • Maintain an enterprise cryptographic inventory to track algorithms, protocols, and systems across the VA environment.
  • Develop risk-based migration plans to transition legacy systems to approved post-quantum cryptography standards.
  • Provide technical guidance for cryptographic modernization aligned with NIST FIPS 203, 204, and 205 standards.
  • Perform prototyping, modeling, and testing of quantum algorithms using tools like Qiskit, Cirq, or the Microsoft Quantum Development Kit.
  • Develop crypto-agile architectures to allow for the seamless replacement of cryptographic components as threats evolve.
  • Conduct security posture assessments to identify risks such as "harvest now, decrypt later" and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Create technical white papers, risk analyses, and briefings to communicate quantum risks to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum 10 years of IT experience.
  • At least 5 years of quantum computing and cryptography experience at a large corporation or Government agency.
  • Certification in IAT III, IAM III, or IASAE III.
  • Expertise in quantum information science, quantum algorithms (Shor’s and Grover’s), and post-quantum cryptography.
  • Proficiency in traditional cryptographic protocols including RSA, AES, PKI, and key management.
  • Ability to develop and test cryptographic solutions using Python, C++, or Java.
  • Experience with quantum development frameworks such as Qiskit, Cirq, Quipper, or the Microsoft Quantum Development Kit.
