TL;DR · PhD Research Intern, Architecture

The PhD Research Intern, Architecture – 2027 joins the Architecture Research Group to help define the future of GPU and data-center computing. This role involves investigating new architecture concepts for GPUs, memory systems, accelerators, and data-center-scale platforms while studying emerging workloads to identify architectural bottlenecks. You will explore hardware-software co-design across compilers, runtime systems, and programming models. Key responsibilities include developing models, simulators, prototypes, and experimental infrastructure to evaluate new ideas regarding memory hierarchy, coherence, and system-level programmability. The role requires proficiency in C/C++, scripting languages, CUDA programming, and building computer system simulators. Candidates must demonstrate a strong background in computer architecture, parallel systems, and low-level software tools like binary translators or compilers to solve complex hardware and software boundary challenges.

What you'll do

  • Investigate new architecture concepts for future GPUs, memory systems, and data-center-scale computing platforms.
  • Identify architectural bottlenecks and opportunities created by emerging workloads in AI and scientific computing.
  • Explore hardware-software co-design across compilers, runtime systems, programming models, and applications.
  • Develop models, simulators, prototypes, and experimental tools to evaluate new architecture ideas.
  • Research new approaches to memory hierarchy, coherence, consistency, and system-level programmability.
  • Communicate research findings through technical reports, presentations, and potential research publications.
  • Transfer successful research ideas, methodologies, and tools into NVIDIA product teams.

What we're looking for

  • Pursuing a PhD degree in a relevant discipline such as CS, CE, EE, Physics, or Math.
  • Possess relevant industrial and university experience in hardware, software, or algorithm development.
  • Demonstrate strong programming ability in C/C++ and scripting languages.
  • Have experience as a CUDA programmer.
  • Possess a background in building computer system simulators.
  • Have experience building efficient low-level software tools such as runtime systems, binary translators, or compilers.
  • Maintain a strong background in computer architecture and parallel computer architectures.
  • Prior research experience and/or research publications at ISCA/MICRO/ASPLOS/HPCA/MLSYS (preferred).
