The Operations Research Intern (PhD) will join the Assignment Engine team to help develop a 24x7 global infrastructure for on-demand logistics. This intern will design and implement improvements to the real-time on-demand dispatching algorithm while analyzing data to perform cutting-edge research. Key responsibilities include collaborating with engineers, data scientists, and product managers to develop scalable solutions for the three-sided marketplace of consumers, merchants, and dashers. The role requires proficiency in mathematical programming software like Cplex, Gurobi, Coin-OR, or Xpress, along with production experience in JVM-based languages such as Java, Kotlin, or Scala. Candidates should possess skills in SQL, statistical analysis, machine learning, and algorithms, specifically regarding vehicle routing problems and real-time dispatching within a complex logistics environment.
Design and implement improvements to the real-time on-demand dispatching algorithm.
Analyze delivery data at a granular level to perform cutting-edge research.

What we're looking for
Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
Must be a PhD student in operations research, industrial engineering, computer science, or a related field graduating between Fall 2027 and Summer 2028.
Have research or industry experience working on complex optimization problems through mathematical programming or metaheuristics.
Have strong programming fundamentals, experience in object-oriented and/or functional programming languages, and a solid understanding of algorithms.
Have experience developing algorithms for logistics problems, especially VRP and real-time dispatching problems.
Have experience with mathematical programming software packages like Cplex, Gurobi, Coin-OR, or Xpress.
Have production experience with a JVM-based language (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Scala).
Have experience with software development lifecycle, modern web applications at scale, statistical analysis, machine learning, SQL, and visualization tools.
