TL;DR · Hardware System Integration Electrical Engineer

The Hardware System Integration Electrical Engineer - Mac joins the hardware team to own key aspects of electrical system design and integration for the MacBook Air. This role involves designing, simulating, debugging, and validating electrical subsystems while managing the design lifecycle through mass production. You will collaborate with mechanical engineering, Apple Silicon, software, and module technology teams to solve complex system-level tradeoffs regarding performance, battery life, thermals, and reliability within space-constrained products. Required skills include expertise in computer system architecture, circuit design, power delivery, and high-speed interfaces like USB, PCIe, and Thunderbolt. You will utilize tools such as Cadence Allegro/OrCAD, SPICE, and 2D/3D field solvers. Core responsibilities include schematic capture, constraint-driven PCB design, signal integrity analysis, and resolving manufacturing issues to ensure high product quality.

What you'll do

  • Design, simulate, and validate robust electrical subsystems for MacBook Air products.
  • Own schematic design and constraint-driven PCB layout using EDA tools like Cadence Allegro.
  • Perform power and signal integrity analysis using SPICE and 2D/3D field solvers.
  • Present design proposals and technical tradeoffs to cross-functional partners during design reviews.
  • Support mass production by resolving line-down issues and investigating manufacturing yield excursions.
  • Implement design improvements to enhance product quality, manufacturability, and production efficiency.
  • Automate validation and debug workflows using data analysis, visualization, and scripting.
  • Debug hardware using high-speed oscilloscopes, vector network analyzers, and protocol analyzers.

What we're looking for

  • Understand design, validation, and debug requirements for common and high-speed interfaces like I2C, SPI, USB, PCIe, and Thunderbolt.
  • Have experience with schematic capture and constraint-driven PCB design using Cadence Allegro/OrCAD or equivalent EDA tools.
  • Have experience with numerical modeling, simulation, and analysis tools including SPICE, 2D/3D field solvers, and power/signal integrity analysis.
  • Have experience with data analysis, visualization, and scripting to automate validation, debug, and engineering workflows.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Hold a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field with industry-level practical experience (preferred).
  • Possess strong electrical engineering fundamentals including analog and digital circuit theory, signal integrity, and power integrity (preferred).
  • Have experience with electrical validation and debug using high-speed oscilloscopes, vector network analyzers, BERTs, and protocol analyzers (preferred).
