TL;DR · Hardware Development Engineer, Power

Hardware Development Engineer, Power (Starlink) joins the Power Electronics team to design and develop power conversion and control systems for Starlink satellites and ground systems. This role involves providing engineering expertise in the design, analysis, and testing of DC-DC power converters for harsh environments while performing system verification testing and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to create new hardware. The work focuses on solving complex electrical power challenges ranging from low voltage to kV levels, including solar/MPPT, battery systems, and ion propulsion. Key technical skills include analog control, discrete logic design, modeling, simulation, and experience with AC-DC converters, power factor correction, and DC-DC topologies. Candidates should be familiar with fault tolerance, failure mode effects and criticality analysis, wire wound and planar inductors, radiation effects, lithium-ion battery handling, and in-lab impedance measurement for high-reliability space applications.

What you'll do

  • Design, analyze, and test DC-DC power converters for harsh environments.
  • Perform design trades and develop requirements for electrical power systems and subsystems.
  • Define and execute verification testing and analysis for electrical power systems.
  • Develop new power electronics hardware in coordination with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Select optimal architectures and components for various DC-DC topologies.
  • Design for fault tolerance, reliability, and radiation effects in spacecraft environments.
  • Perform modeling, simulation, and lab measurements for power electronics components.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or another STEM discipline.
  • At least 1 year of professional experience in power converter development.
  • Master's degree in electrical engineering or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience in modeling, simulation, and testing of power electronics.
  • Proficiency in analog control, discrete logic design, and DC-DC topologies.
  • Knowledge of AC-DC converters, power factor correction, and radiation effects on spacecraft systems.
  • Familiarity with lithium-ion battery handling and solar array input power sources.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or eligible for required export control authorizations.
