JOB TITLE: Group Director, Software Engineering - Applied AI As the Group Director, Applied AI & Engineering, you will lead a high-caliber team within the Retail Intelligence group to build a next-generation intelligence layer. You will define the multi-year roadmap and strategy for commerce foundational models, shifting from siloed models to unified, multi-task generative architectures. Your daily responsibilities include leading applied AI researchers, machine learning engineers, and data scientists to train large-scale models on multi-modal datasets. You will utilize deep learning, distributed training frameworks, and low-latency inference optimization techniques to power Search, Personalization, Sponsored Ads, Conversational Commerce, and Supply Chain Forecasting. The role requires expertise in RecSys, Generative Recommenders, and Hierarchical Sequential Transducers to solve complex business problems and deliver scalable AI services across the enterprise ecosystem.

What you'll do

  • Define the multi-year roadmap for Walmart’s Commerce Foundational Models.
  • Drive the transition from siloed, domain-specific models to unified, multi-task generative architectures.
  • Lead a high-caliber team of Applied AI Researchers, Machine Learning Engineers, and Data Scientists.
  • Oversee the training and execution of large-scale foundational models on multi-modal datasets.
  • Integrate foundational models into Search, Personalization, Sponsored Ads, and Supply Chain Forecasting.
  • Partner with product and engineering leaders to ensure seamless model integration across the ecosystem.
  • Serve as the primary champion and evangelist for foundational models within Walmart Global Tech.

What we're looking for

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Mathematics, or a highly quantitative field.
  • 8+ years of experience directly managing and scaling high-performing data science and ML engineering teams.
  • At least 3+ years of experience managing managers.
  • Proven track record of designing, training, and deploying deep learning models in production at massive scale.
  • Deep understanding of distributed training frameworks.
  • Ph.D. in CS, ML, or related field with a strong publication record in top-tier AI/ML conferences (preferred).
  • Domain expertise in RecSys and building Generative Recommenders, HSTU, or sequence-based models (preferred).
  • Deep knowledge of low-latency inference optimization techniques and real-time retrieval (preferred).
