Electrical Design Engineer - Electric Power As part of the Caterpillar Switchgear team within the Electric Power Division, you will design, develop, and build low and medium voltage switchgear for generator paralleling applications. You will interpret customer specifications while ensuring compliance with industry regulations such as NEC, UL 508, UL 891, UL 1558, UL MV, CSA 22-2, and ANSI requirements. Your daily responsibilities include creating bills of materials in an ERP system, directing purchasing and CAD designers for wiring and assembly drawings, and supporting production during manufacturing. You will also write and validate PLC code for generator control systems using Schneider or Allen Bradley platforms. The role requires expertise in power engineering, multi-function relay programming, and UL508A control enclosure design to solve technical challenges related to critical infrastructure and industrial electric power applications.

What you'll do

  • Design, develop, and build low and medium voltage switchgear for generator paralleling applications.
  • Interpret customer specifications and drawings while ensuring compliance with NEC, UL, and ANSI requirements.
  • Create detailed bills of materials within the company ERP system.
  • Provide technical direction to purchasing, procurement, and CAD designers for wiring and assembly drawings.
  • Support the production team during the manufacturing process of equipment.
  • Write and validate PLC code for generator control systems using various communication protocols.

What we're looking for

  • Associate's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related program.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (preferred).
  • Ability to interpret customer specifications and drawings while applying NEC, UL, CSA, and ANSI requirements.
  • Experience writing and validating PLC code for generator control systems.
  • Proficiency in product design and development from concept through production.
  • Extensive experience with tools and techniques for root cause analysis and technical problem-solving.
  • PLC experience with Schneider and/or Allen Bradley (preferred).
  • Experience with UL508A control enclosure design, Power Engineering, and Multi-Function Relay Programming or Operation (preferred).
