TL;DR · Design Engineering Specialist, Electromagnetic Design

Design Engineering Specialist – Electromagnetic Design joins the Advanced Motor Technology team to provide technical leadership for the electromagnetic design, analysis, and optimization of an electric motor and generator portfolio. This role serves as a technical authority, overseeing everything from concept creation and architecture selection to manufacturing support and product integration. The specialist will conduct trade studies on torque production, efficiency, and demagnetization risk while developing in-house tools using MATLAB and Python. Key responsibilities include managing New Technology Introduction initiatives and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver solutions for construction, mining, industrial, and power applications. Required expertise includes electric machine theory, magnetic materials, and simulation platforms like JMAG or ANSYS Maxwell. The role addresses the technical challenge of developing high-performance, durable, and manufacturable electric machines for heavy-duty off-highway and industrial environments.

What you'll do

  • Serve as the technical authority for electromagnetic design, establishing architectures and strategies for electric motors and generators.
  • Lead the design, analysis, and optimization of various motor topologies using analytical and simulation-based methods.
  • Conduct trade studies on torque production, efficiency, losses, flux behavior, and demagnetization risk to inform design decisions.
  • Develop and enhance in-house design tools and automation capabilities using MATLAB and Python to accelerate technology maturation.
  • Lead New Technology Introduction initiatives by evaluating emerging technologies and developing roadmaps for future products.
  • Provide expertise in magnetic materials, including magnet selection, electrical steel evaluation, and cost-performance optimization.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver integrated machine solutions from initial concept through production launch.
  • Mentor and develop engineering talent to strengthen organizational capability in electromagnetic analysis and simulation methods.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated expertise in electric machine theory, motor and generator design, electromagnetic analysis, and machine optimization.
  • Experience collaborating with power electronics and controls teams on inverter constraints, flux weakening strategies, and performance map development.
  • Extensive experience in project management, troubleshooting technical problems, and navigating the product development life cycle in manufacturing organizations.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and leadership audiences.
  • Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering with emphasis in electric machines, electromagnetics, or power conversion (preferred).
  • Deep expertise in permanent magnet machine design, particularly Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) architectures (preferred).
  • Experience with JMAG, ANSYS Maxwell, Motor-CAD, Flux, MagNet, or equivalent simulation platforms (preferred).
