TL;DR · Applied Research Intern, Proactive Intelligence & Customer World Models

Careers - Applied Research Intern, Proactive Intelligence & Customer World Models (PhD / Graduate Co-op) is a graduate student role within the Apollo team at Block Applied R&D. You will own research problems end-to-end, developing methods, running experiments, and shipping production systems that power proactive intelligence. Your work involves building the Customer World Model to represent customer goals, history, and constraints. Key responsibilities include developing representation learning for long-horizon histories, event-based foundation models, and agentic decision systems capable of multi-step reasoning and tool use. You will utilize Python, PyTorch, and JAX to work on reinforcement learning, causal reasoning, and reward modeling. The role solves the technical challenge of creating systems that anticipate needs, learn from feedback loops, and reason over evolving customer states to initiate helpful actions.

What you'll do

  • Own a research problem end-to-end from framing the question to shipping into production systems.
  • Build rich customer representations from event streams, financial activity, and behavioral data.
  • Develop systems to anticipate customer needs and initiate proactive actions.
  • Design agents capable of multi-step reasoning and autonomous workflow execution.
  • Create methods for continuous learning from real-world outcomes using reinforcement learning.
  • Build evaluation frameworks to predict real-world performance, trust, and customer value.
  • Translate independent research ideas into working systems using Python and PyTorch or JAX.

What we're looking for

  • Currently enrolled in an MS or PhD program in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Mathematics, Operations Research, or a related field.
  • Must be returning to the graduate program after the co-op.
  • Strong foundations in deep learning, optimization, representation learning, and foundation models.
  • Experience conducting independent research and translating ideas into working systems.
  • Fluency in Python and experience with PyTorch, JAX, or similar frameworks.
  • Evidence of research excellence through publications, open-source contributions, technical leadership, or equivalent work.
  • Experience with large language models and agentic systems (preferred).
  • Experience with reinforcement learning, reward modeling, or sequential decision-making (preferred).
