AIML - Machine Learning and Applied Research, Responsible AI and Safety is a role within the team leading Responsible AI & Safety initiatives for global generative AI products. Working at the intersection of policy, product, and GenAI, you will collaborate with machine learning researchers, engineers, and design teams to develop groundbreaking solutions. Your daily responsibilities include shaping safety policies with leadership and regulatory stakeholders while producing safety evaluations that uphold core values. This involves thoughtful data sampling, curation for evaluation datasets, detailed annotations, and careful auto-grading to assess feature performance. You will apply expertise in machine learning principles, NLP, Computer Vision, Transformers, LLMs, VLMs, and diffusion models. The role addresses the critical challenge of ensuring safeguards advance both user protection and product innovation while addressing fairness and bias within generative AI systems.

What you'll do

  • Shape safety policies for global generative AI products in partnership with leadership and regulatory stakeholders.
  • Develop and deliver technical solutions for machine learning research at the intersection of emerging technologies and real-world use cases.
  • Perform thoughtful data sampling, creation, and curation to build evaluation datasets for generative models.
  • Create high-quality, detailed annotations and implement auto-grading systems to assess feature performance.
  • Analyze safety evaluation results to determine their impact on the overall user experience.
  • Address challenges related to fairness and bias in large language models and vision models.
  • Implement safeguards that balance user protection with product innovation across Apple's device ecosystem.

What we're looking for

  • At least 3 years of experience in machine learning, including work with generative models (Transformers, LLMs, VLMs), NLP, or Computer Vision.
  • At least 4 years of research or product deployment record in responsible AI areas.
  • Publications in top ML venues such as ACL, CHI, CVPR, EMNLP, FAccT, ICML, Interspeech, NeurIPS, or UIST.
  • Strong knowledge of machine learning principles and development methodologies for LLMs, foundation models, and diffusion models.
  • Experience using generative models for evaluation and product development with knowledge of common challenges and failures.
  • A PhD, MS, or BS in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field.
  • Experience working specifically in the Responsible AI space.
  • Proven success contributing in highly cross-functional environments and shipping complex AI systems at global scale.
