TL;DR · AI Native Hardware & Software Codesign Intern

The AI Native Hardware & Software Codesign internship 2027 places interns within the AI Native Systems research team to explore the intersection of hardware and software through a continuous co-design loop. Working with a multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to research and prototype development in areas such as AI-assisted compiler development, kernel generation, RTL generation, hardware verification, and cross-layer system optimization. You will apply machine learning, generative AI, automated reasoning, and reinforcement learning to solve complex engineering challenges while designing experiments to evaluate performance and efficiency. The role involves utilizing tools like LLVM, MLIR, Triton, CUDA, PyTorch, JAX, Verilog, or SystemVerilog. This work addresses the technical challenge of improving end-to-end system performance by integrating hardware and software development rather than treating them as independent layers in the computing stack.

What you'll do

  • Develop research prototypes and conduct experiments in areas like compiler development, kernel optimization, or RTL generation.
  • Apply machine learning, generative AI, and reinforcement learning to solve hardware and software engineering challenges.
  • Investigate post-training methods to extend the capabilities of open models for complex technical tasks.
  • Design benchmarks to evaluate system performance, correctness, efficiency, and engineering productivity.
  • Explore cross-layer connections between different components of the computing stack.
  • Document research findings through technical reports, presentations, code, and potential publications.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree preferred.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a Master's or PhD program in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong programming or hardware development skills in languages such as Python, C, C++, Verilog, or SystemVerilog.
  • Demonstrated experience in areas like compilers, kernel development, machine learning systems, reinforcement learning, computer architecture, digital design, RTL development, or hardware verification.
  • Experience conducting technical experiments, debugging complex systems, analyzing quantitative results, or developing research prototypes.
  • Ability to communicate technical ideas and collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
  • Experience with reinforcement learning, reward modeling, or post-training techniques for extending open models is preferred.
  • Experience with generative AI, LLMs, compiler/kernel technologies (LLVM, MLIR, Triton, CUDA), or hardware simulation tools is preferred.
