TL;DR · Turbomachinery Engineer (Raptor)

SpaceX is hiring a Turbomachinery Engineer to join its Raptor team, focusing on designing and developing advanced turbopumps for rocket engines. The role involves leading the design from concept through qualification, conducting aerodynamic/hydrodynamic analysis, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure manufacturability and performance targets are met. Key responsibilities include hydrodynamic sizing, mechanical analysis, and testing of components, as well as developing innovative methodologies using tools like Siemens NX and Ansys. Candidates should have a master’s degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering, experience with turbomachinery design and manufacturing, and proficiency in CAD packages and simulation software. The position requires hands-on problem-solving skills and the ability to work under tight deadlines.

What you'll do

  • Design and build turbopumps for liquid-fueled rocket engines.
  • Conduct hydrodynamic sizing and flowpath design analysis for Raptor engine components.
  • Ensure detailed mechanical analysis meets life and reliability targets for all turbopump components.
  • Develop new methodologies and first principles-based tools to determine turbopump performance.
  • Lead resolution of issues encountered during development/qualification testing of turbopumps.

What we're looking for

  • Master's degree or higher in aerospace, aeronautics, or mechanical engineering.
  • 1+ years of experience in turbomachinery design and hands-on hardware build.
  • Strong understanding of pump hydrodynamic/aerodynamic design and thermodynamics.
  • Experience with turbomachinery manufacturing and design for manufacturability.
  • Proficiency in Ansys (CFX, mechanical, thermal) and Siemens NX or similar CAD packages.
