TL;DR · Systems Engineer, Hardware Obsolescence Management

The Systems Engineer Hardware Obsolescence Management joins the FBM Sustainment Team to support the long-term sustainment of a fire control system. This role focuses on identifying and mitigating hardware obsolescence risks by assessing the system-level impact of unavailable or end-of-life components. The engineer will maintain an obsolescence risk register, analyze how substitutions affect software dependencies and reliability, and develop mitigation options like last-time buys or module redesigns. Key responsibilities include leading trade studies, defining verification approaches for replacement hardware, and coordinating with supply chain and manufacturing teams. Required skills include systems engineering, configuration management, and risk management. The position addresses the technical challenge of Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS) to preserve the performance and safety of complex, long-life, safety-critical systems.

  • Maintain an obsolescence risk register covering affected parts, configurations, inventory, and demand.
  • Analyze how proposed substitutions or redesigns affect system requirements, interfaces, and software dependencies.
  • Develop and document mitigation options like qualified alternate parts, last-time buys, and technology refreshes.
  • Lead trade studies evaluating technical risk, cost, schedule, availability, and verification effort.
  • Define requirements and verification approaches for replacement hardware.
  • Support configuration management and update technical documentation and parts lists.
  • Communicate risks, recommendations, and implementation status to program stakeholders.

  • Master's degree, plus 6 months of relevant experience.
  • Experience in systems engineering, hardware engineering, or product sustainment.
  • Ability to analyze requirements, interfaces, and the system-level effects of hardware changes.
  • Experience evaluating technical alternatives and documenting engineering decisions.
  • Familiarity with configuration management, verification planning, and risk management.
  • Experience with hardware obsolescence or diminishing manufacturing sources and material shortages (DMSMS) (preferred).
  • Familiarity with electronic component lifecycles, bills of materials, supplier data, and product lifecycle management tools (preferred).
  • Experience supporting complex, safety-critical, or long-life systems (preferred).
