JOB TITLE: Summer 2027: PhD AI Research Intern The PhD AI Research Intern joins a high-caliber team of research scientists, domain experts, data scientists, and machine learning engineers. This role focuses on foundational AI problems that influence a portfolio of fintech offerings. You will design and run experiments to explore open research questions, develop and prototype novel models or algorithms, and rigorously evaluate them against baselines. Key research areas include robust and safe AI, neuro-symbolic AI, reinforcement learning, agents, multi-agent systems, and post-training and inference-time scaling in language models. You will utilize Python with TensorFlow or PyTorch to synthesize current literature and contribute to publication-quality write-ups. The work involves applying cutting-edge innovations to improve customer experience and pushing the state of the art in AI research.

What you'll do

  • Design and run experiments to explore open research questions in areas like generative AI or reinforcement learning.
  • Develop and prototype novel models, algorithms, or methods and evaluate them against relevant baselines.
  • Read and synthesize current AI research literature to identify promising directions for project development.
  • Partner with research scientists and engineers to connect research findings to real product and customer impact.
  • Document methodology, findings, and code clearly for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Present research work and contribute to publication-quality write-ups where applicable.

What we're looking for

  • Must be currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Expected graduation date must be after the internship ends.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for the duration of the internship.
  • Experience in one area of AI such as NLP, LLMs, generative AI, uncertainty quantification, reinforcement learning, or optimization.
  • Established track record of publication, ideally with first-author papers at top-tier AI conferences.
  • Experience developing and debugging in Python with TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar frameworks.
  • Experience disseminating scientific work in English through paper submissions and conference presentations.
  • Ability to work in a hybrid environment at an Intuit office location.
