TL;DR · Staff Robotics Software Engineer, Mission Autonomy

Staff Robotics Software Engineer - Mission Autonomy The Staff Robotics Software Engineer joins the Maneuver Dominance team to develop autonomy for Thunder, an autonomous attack rotorcraft designed for contested environments. This role involves leading the delivery of vehicle perception and planning capabilities, including systems analysis, sensor selection, motion planning, and behavior analysis. You will own a multi-year software roadmap, architecting trusted navigation and collision avoidance systems while collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration. The role requires high-impact individual contribution across the entire perception and planning stack using C++, Python, computer vision, sensor fusion, machine learning, and SLAM. Candidates must be proficient in managing hardware like radar, sonar, LIDAR, and cameras. You will also develop simulation and test infrastructure to validate algorithms for autonomous vehicles operating in complex aerial environments where communication links are actively contested.

What you'll do

  • Design and deliver multi-year software roadmaps for perception and planning capabilities across multiple teams.
  • Architect and implement trusted navigation, collision avoidance, and situational awareness systems for autonomous vehicles.
  • Develop sensor suites, perception algorithms, and motion planning logic to ensure safe vehicle operation.
  • Perform high-impact individual contribution work across the entire perception and planning software stack.
  • Apply advanced computer vision, sensor fusion, and machine learning techniques to enhance vehicle capabilities.
  • Conduct testing and validation of algorithms using simulation tools and real-world data analysis.
  • Act as a technical owner for systems by managing requirements, stakeholder engagement, and team coordination.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a relevant field.
  • 7+ years of experience in C++ and/or Python software development.
  • Familiarity with autonomous vehicle hardware and sensors such as radar, sonar, LIDAR, and cameras.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of at least one of: computer vision, sensor fusion, SLAM, motion planning, or machine learning.
  • Experience in a senior perception or planning role for the delivery of a robotic system.
  • Capacity to act as technical owner for systems, including stakeholder engagement, roadmap management, and team coordination.
  • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders to define and implement robust validation and verification strategies.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.
  • Experience with autonomous systems in ground, air, maritime, or space domains (preferred).
  • Experience with simulation tools like Gazebo, Unity, or Unreal Engine for algorithm testing (preferred).
  • Knowledge of safety standards and certification processes for autonomous systems (preferred).
  • Familiarity with Systems Engineering concepts (preferred).
