TL;DR · Staff Materials Engineer, Design Allowables & Materials Data

Staff Materials Engineer, Design Allowables & Materials Data joins the Materials Engineering team to serve as a technical authority across a diverse portfolio including autonomous aircraft, submarines, missiles, and solid rocket motors. This role focuses on establishing the methodology, infrastructure, and governance for transforming materials characterization into defensible, analysis-ready design allowables. You will build a materials data pipeline to ingest and structure information from various sources, define standards for fatigue and fracture-critical methodologies, and create a digital thread of material traceability across the supply chain. The role requires expertise in materials science, metallurgy, and mechanical testing, with specific proficiency in statistical basis methods like MMPDS or CMH-17. You will manage complex data structures to ensure consistency across business lines while addressing technical challenges involving advanced composites, high-temperature alloys, and additively manufactured materials within a rigorous defense context.

What you'll do

  • Define and own the standards for converting test data into defensible design values across all business lines.
  • Architect and manage a materials data pipeline to ingest, structure, and govern information in an enterprise database.
  • Transform material characterization and testing from ad-hoc tasks into a standardized, strategic workflow.
  • Establish standardized methodologies for fatigue-life assessment and damage tolerance in fracture-critical applications.
  • Convert supply chain material property and certification data into a searchable digital thread for better traceability.
  • Serve as the cross-business technical authority for materials allowables to support design, analysis, and quality teams.
  • Develop and implement technical standards that ensure consistent material qualification across the entire product portfolio.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of materials and process engineering experience in aerospace, defense, or a comparable domain.
  • Deep expertise in materials characterization and design allowables development using statistical methods like MMPDS or CMH-17.
  • Demonstrated experience managing materials data including structure, statistics, traceability, and converting test results into usable values.
  • Proven ability to establish technical standards and drive adoption across multiple teams.
  • Strong technical writing skills to create clear, unambiguous, and actionable specifications.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Top Secret security clearance.
