TL;DR · Senior Materials & Process Engineer, Rocket Motor Systems (Polymeric Ablatives)

Senior Materials & Process Engineer, Rocket Motor Systems (Polymeric Ablatives) serves as a technical lead within the Rocket Motor Systems team, providing expertise for solid rocket motor components including propellants, cases, thermal protection systems, nozzles, and energetic components. The role involves establishing infrastructure to scale from prototype development to high-rate production by developing material specifications, process specifications, and standard acceptance test procedures. You will perform materials characterization involving mechanical testing, thermal analysis, rheology, and ablation performance while utilizing techniques like FTIR, Raman, X-ray, CT scan, and ultrasonic testing. Key responsibilities include managing supplier relationships, leading failure investigations, and ensuring compliance with standards such as CMH-17 and JANNAF. The position focuses on the technical challenges of manufacturing polymeric constituents, high-temperature coatings, and adhesive bonding within complex aerospace propulsion environments to ensure robust production readiness.

What you'll do

  • Develop and maintain material specifications for raw materials, components, and assemblies across all rocket motor systems.
  • Create process specifications for manufacturing operations including propellant processing, heat treatment, and assembly.
  • Establish standard acceptance test procedures and NDI technique sheets for incoming materials and finished hardware.
  • Convert informal work instructions into formal, configuration-controlled engineering documentation with defined process windows.
  • Lead material characterization programs including mechanical testing, thermal analysis, and the development of design allowables.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for polymeric materials selection and qualification across rocket motor components.
  • Lead failure investigations and root cause analyses for material-related anomalies during review boards.
  • Manage supplier technical relationships and drive material qualifications from development through production readiness.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of materials and process engineering experience in aerospace, propulsion, or defense applications.
  • Proven experience developing material specifications and process specifications for production programs.
  • Strong technical background in areas such as high-temperature coatings, adhesives, insulation, propellant materials, and thermal protection systems.
  • Experience with material characterization, testing, documentation, and leading root cause investigations.
  • Ability to obtain and hold a U.S. Top Secret security clearance.
  • Direct experience with solid rocket motor systems including propellants, motor cases, nozzles, or energetic components (preferred).
  • Experience developing design allowables per CMH-17, JANNAF, or MIL-HDBK-17 standards (preferred).
