TL;DR · Staff AV Safety Engineer, Human Factors

The Staff AV Safety Engineer - Human Factors (GPSSC) provides technical leadership within the Safety Assurance for Effective Autonomous Driving Software department. This role serves as a human factors expert to ensure the safe development and operation of automated driving systems. You will analyze human performance, workload, and automation limitations to derive traceable safety requirements, design guidance, and operational controls. Key responsibilities include leading cross-functional hazard analyses, providing technical direction for human-machine interface features like driver monitoring systems, and evaluating system interactions under various conditions. You will utilize skills in human factors engineering, systems engineering, and structured hazard analysis methods such as STPA, FTA, and FMECA. The work focuses on solving complex human-machine interaction problems to ensure safety in automated vehicle technologies.

What you'll do

  • Lead cross-functional hazard analyses to identify risks related to driver-automation interaction, human error, and mode confusion.
  • Derive traceable safety requirements, mitigations, and operational controls from human factors hazard assessments.
  • Provide technical direction for human-machine interface features including visual alerts, driver monitoring systems, and displays.
  • Evaluate automated-system interactions to ensure they support appropriate attention, decision-making, and recovery during failures.
  • Define research strategies and convert study results into actionable safety requirements and best practices.
  • Analyze incident data, video, and telemetry to identify human-error causal factors and improve system design.
  • Provide human factors input for operator training, fatigue management, and performance-monitoring programs.
  • Own and contribute to human factors safety-case claims and evidence for launch-readiness activities.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Factors, Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 10+ years of experience applying human factors engineering principles to safety-critical transportation systems.
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing human interactions with complex automation systems.
  • Demonstrated expertise in leading or contributing to structured hazard analyses such as STPA, FTA, and FMECA.
  • Experience translating human factors findings into safety requirements, design recommendations, operational controls, and training guidance.
  • Experience planning, reviewing, executing, or interpreting human factors research or human-in-the-loop studies.
  • Ability to analyze operational events, incidents, or operator performance to identify human-error causal factors using data and telemetry.
  • Strong technical writing, presentation, and cross-functional communication skills to frame ambiguous problems and defend decision-making.
  • Advanced degree in Human Factors, Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical degree (preferred).
  • Experience in the automated vehicle industry (preferred).
  • Experience working with research institutions, external vendors, and multidisciplinary academic or engineering teams (preferred).
  • Experience with functional safety, SOTIF, safety management systems, safety cases, and other safety standards (preferred).
  • Familiarity with requirement tools such as JAMA or DOORS (preferred).
