Senior Staff Software Engineer

What you'll do

• Define and drive the technical vision and architecture for backend systems powering Pinterest Assistant at scale.
• Lead the design of core platform components including orchestration, memory, personalization, and context management.
• Develop infrastructure to support multi-modal, conversational experiences and AI-powered applications.
• Establish engineering best practices for production LLM and agent systems, including observability and safety mechanisms.
• Partner with Product, Design, and Machine Learning teams to build personalized user experiences.
• Mentor engineers and raise the technical bar through architecture reviews and leadership guidance.
• Influence broader company strategy by identifying foundational investments that improve developer velocity and reliability.
• Translate complex AI concepts like RAG and tool execution into scalable production features.

What we're looking for

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as computer science or equivalent experience.
• 10+ years of backend software engineering experience leading large, ambiguous systems for consumer experiences.
• 3+ years of experience as a technical lead driving the architecture and development of large-scale distributed backend systems.
• Proficiency in Python, TypeScript, Node, or similar languages and ecosystems.
• Experience building platforms or foundational infrastructure to improve developer velocity and scalability.
• Strong understanding of model-driven systems and experience partnering with machine learning engineers on AI products.
• Proven track record of mentoring senior engineers and improving engineering quality across an organization.
• Experience with LLM-based products, conversational AI, RAG, or full-stack development (preferred).
